Butane / Propane Transload Facility — New Jersey

Riggs Distler was subcontracted to perform mechanical services in support of Phase I of this project to expand existing propane and butane caverns and install truck offloading stations at an important port and rail terminal. The project sets the stage for the site’s potential expansion into a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in the future. Our work on this project involved:

  • Installing 20-spot, double-sided rail off-loading racks to accommodate 40 rail cars.
  • Installing two dock-loading arms.
  • Installing a knock-out drum and flare stack.
  • Installing 40,000 feet of pipe and performing 15,000 shop welds and 3,000 field welds.

Challenges Overcome

To meet the project’s extremely tight schedule, Riggs Distler mobilized 70 field employees and 40 shop workers, increasing manpower to compensate for the compressed engineering schedule required to release the Issued-for-Construction drawings. With an incoming shipment scheduled for early May, about 6 months from the project’s commencement, the facility needed to be up and running in order to receive it, and it was critical that Riggs Distler complete all the necessary work in advance. 

To hit the deadline, Riggs Distler’s staff worked 10-hour days, 6 days per week, always staying in close coordination with the client to ensure the project progressed smoothly. We also added additional space and capabilities in our fabrication shop, allowing us to better accommodate the needs of fast-paced projects.

Results Delivered

Riggs Distler’s top-notch staff, commitment to working overtime, and expanded fabrication capabilities allowed us to complete all project work well in advance of the scheduled May delivery. The expanded propane and butane caverns and new truck offloading stations have greatly increased capacity at the site, allowing more product to flow through the port and paving the way for the facility’s future expansion to accommodate LNG. Riggs Distler was proud of our work on this complex project, which allowed us to demonstrate our ability to meet aggressive schedules and keep costs low by delivering single-source, turnkey solutions for our clients.
