41-Mile Transmission Line Rebuild

Located in New Jersey

  • Capability
    • Electric Infrastructure
  • Completion 2017-2019

Project Overview

From 2017 to 2019, in southern New Jersey, we served as the general contractor for a 41-mile 230kV/138kV transmission line rebuild—strengthening the regional electric grid with improved reliability and resilience for local communities.

Key Highlights

In the marshes and bogs of the New Jersey pinelands, our environmental matting team installed extensive matting to protect ecologically sensitive areas. Where matting wasn’t feasible, we brought in an aviation consultant to set poles and equipment using helicopters. Coordination with multiple environmental and archaeological regulatory agencies was required due to the presence of protected species and undisclosed archaeological sites. Working alongside New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife monitors, we preserved the integrity of local habitats and avoided construction during sensitive mating seasons.

Project Scope of Work Included:

  • Reinforcing 41 Miles of 230kv/138kv Electrical Transmission Lines
  • Replacing 243 Lattice Towers with Steel Monopoles Installed on Foundations or Vibratory Caissons
  • Installing 6 New 1590 ACSR Conductors and 2 New OPGW Lines
  • Managing Environmental and Archaeological Compliance
  • Installing, Maintaining and Removing Erosion and Sediment Controls
  • Managing Civil Contractors Installing 243 Foundations
  • 70–90 Workers On-Site Daily

Challenges and Results

Despite the tough terrain and complicated schedule requirements, we successfully completed all phases while ensuring compliance and maximizing efficiency. Project managers also navigated eight specific outage windows to ensure uninterrupted service. The upgraded line withstands weather damage lasting over a half-century and deliver increased power to residents and businesses throughout southern New Jersey.
